Stay well clear! With the amount you pay a year, or will do from now anyway, you would expect a University that could at least provide a quality of teaching that suggests the tuition fees are actually going towards finding capable tutors. Some say that they have never been onto a construction site, yet they are teaching construction students.... others seem to take that fact that they didn't do as well as they would like at university out on their students when they are marking the work. OK I'm not expecting to be given 80% for every assignment I hand in regardless of the quality. But you wouldn't expect to see such a discrepancy between markers and tutors saying all I'm interested in is the fact, I'm not a details person... perhaps why we get poor marks from that tutor, it may suggest why the marks a poor... because he doesn't read it...?

Other examples included a statistics tutor when being asked for help explaining to the student that he didn't know what statistical tests they should carry out. Is he really suited for the job?

When the module leader explains that he is worried about the content of the course because he doesn't believe it prepares students for the real world! I mean come on you are the module leader after all, do something about it!

You wouldn't expect to have to wait up to 20 minutes for a computer to sign on and when it does eventually sign on be told that your home space is full and the only way around it is to delete work. I mean come on, work is a big part of uni, so why should you have to delete it? You can imagine the scenario - "sorry tutor I couldn't hand in my essay because it was a choice between this and another - due to the fact I had to delete it so save my other one". Yeh right the tutor will say in disbelief and like normal just dismiss the student's comments.

Students are the customer, without us the tutors wouldn't have a job. I think they forget that when they employ their selective response technique to emails, don't get me wrong some are great but there are some who seem to decide if they think they need to reply. Well come on you are teaching us to be professional, why not show that you are too and show some basic common courtesy to the customer.

The hardest part about being at Sheffield Hallam University is who do you air your concerns to? There is a fear that the tutors will take out any bad feelings for any comments you put forward when they next mark your work. To be honest they are pretty untouchable really making it very hard to question not just feedback, but their real ability.

Sheffield as a city is great! But the biggest let down is Sheffield Hallam University. One would expect to come out knowing the debt they have built up has gone to something worthwhile. When the reality is there are a handful of tutors worth their weight in gold that want to help while the remaining 99% seem to want to make things hard and mess you around.

Don't base your choice on my views, but consider it when deciding on which University to give your custom to, after all you are the customer and want the best experience possible.
