Cost of Living:
Shops & Banks:
Enjoyable experience, my fellow students were very friendly, most tutors were helpful. I feel as if my degree will help me find a job I am interested fairly quickly, and live a more fulfilling life. Many different subjects were covered across the curriculum in my 4 years at Abertay. The library has a good set up for working away on your own or within a group dynamic. However, the student union could be busier and shows the lack of people attending the University at times. Also, more could be done to monitor the Sports teams such as Football, and Rugby. Many of the sports teams are run by students who choose their friends for the team and ruins the experience for others.
The online facilities are accessible enough, as the University is small and generally listens to feedback it is likely that further investment will be made into an overall well-rounded and useful learning experience with the use of their Blackboard system. Other services such as the Gym is a modest size which hopefully will be invested into in the future to expand the capacity.
Another drawback with the University is the lack of investment from the Government which holds back the Uni from moving forwards. As much of their funding comes from International students, which make up less than a quarter of the overall students it is unlikely for Abertay to expand much in the future without shrewdly and wisely managing the overall activity of the institution.
Dundee, as a city, has reasonable nightlife. However, there are nightclubs which students may think about avoiding such as Fat Sam's, and on some evenings Liquid. The best night outs can be had at the Reading Rooms or Underground, most likely. Although Dundee Uni Union can be a good experience for your first year at University as there are many other young students there too. It is locally famous for it's Tuesday night Skint which has cheap entrance and drinks. Abertay Union however does not rival Dundee Uni Union in the same way. Although it is an easy going environment to hang out with friends, play pool, have a drink and chat.
Overall, Abertay provided me with an enjoyable experience I will always look back on in fondness. However, the University is greatly in the shadow of the larger University of Dundee, who Abertay have fought off previous merger attempts in the past.
