If you are thinking about doing a PhD in geology at the University of Aberdeen, please stop now. This university is seriously corrupt.
You will rarely be given sufficient supervision (that is if you even get to see your supervisor, as several lecturers go off for months on end and leave their students in the dark!). Neither is there anyone else to turn to for help, this includes the heads of department and school and anyone in registry who are just as, or if not more, useless than the rest. This is proven by the high rate of dropout from a PhD in the geology and petroleum geology department.
The last year of my PhD was spent doing it alone, away from the department due to the severe bullying I received from my supervisor. When this was reported, a grand total of nothing was done by the head of department. One year after submission I have yet to hear back about my corrections. Out of the 12 months, 3 were spent on my corrections, leaving 9 months waiting to hear about the outcome of my PhD (when stated in the department's handbooks this should be no more than 2 months).
Asking registry to help speed up this process proved pointless, as very little was done and I was simply told to wait. Don't chose to study (or work!) at the University of Aberdeen.
